About Us

Off the Wookie is the creation of Matt Allen (Ice Cream Man), the Ice Cream Crew and all of the fans, writers, artists and fun-loving cats and kittens who make it possible for us to travel the country in the name of free ice cream. First published in 2006, the Wookie has become a staple of South by Southwest , one of Ice Cream Man's favorite music festivals. Every year at this music, film, media, tech and arts mecca, the Crew cruises all over Austin, TX, giving thousands of free ice creams to the public.

The Wookie, which comes with those ice creams, is Ice Cream Man's "super fun happy motivate manual for joy making" - in other words, an annual collection of How-To guides, inspiring stories, artwork and other randomness, with the purpose of entertaining festival goers while they wait in line for the next panel, screening, showcase or party. Past stories have included a guide to making Kool-Aid pickles, the international road rally journal of an ice cream truck racing from France to Tunisia, a history of circus peanuts, and a visit to the world's largest collection of pinball machines.

The next Wookie will be available, in print and right here, on the first day of SXSW Interactive. Check back for updates and fully browseable archives of our back catalog, and we'll catch you at the Ice Cream truck...
